The manufacturing sector is constantly evolving, and precision in forecasting market demand is crucial for business success. In response to this challenge, Adige SpA, a subsidiary of the BLM Group , participated in the Industrial AI Challenge, an initiative promoted by Hit Hub Innovazione Trentino.


For 11 weeks, a team of students from the University of Trento had the opportunity to apply the skills acquired during their studies, developing an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) model aimed at supporting strategic planning. This model will support Adige's managers' decision-making process by coordinating AI's forecasts with the production workflow.

Our Consortium played a supportive role in providing mentorship and guiding the team through resolving this challenge.

Context & Company


Adige SpA, part of the BLM Group, is one of the leading Italian companies specializing in the production of laser tube-cutting machines. With an annual turnover of 250 million euros (in 2022) and a strong global presence, the company is known for the excellence of the "Made in Italy" brand, characterized by the entire product life cycle being realized in our country.

Operating according to the "make-to-order" production model, Adige SpA faces significant challenges related to long lead times for components and relatively short production times. This dynamic emphasizes the importance of accurate demand forecasting, as anticipating component restocking orders is essential to avoid stockout phenomena and financial inefficiencies due to unused components.
 

The Challenge


The challenge faced by our team required the development of an integrated system aimed at optimizing production planning on both the operational and the strategic levels.

On the one hand, the team focused on implementing an AI Forecasting system to predict long-term demand, providing strategic insights. On the other hand, we worked on the development of an AI Planner, a prospective tool designed to harmonize sales data with production planning. This tool will close the loop between the long-term forecasting data provided by the AI Forecasting system and the short-term execution managed by the Planning Management Assistant (PMA), creating a seamless flow from prediction to completion.

On the importance of Data 


A significant portion of the work was dedicated to the collection, analysis, and curation of data, which is crucial in any AI-focused project. Inferior-quality input data can indeed compromise the accuracy and reliability of the analyses and forecasts. A data-centric approach, with particular attention to the relationships between different entities, is essential to ensure informative and precise results. Diligence in data management, considering it as a central element to gain meaningful insights, is a practice that contributes to the success of any analytical or predictive initiative.

Initially, the team studied the business context, exploring key variables and data characteristics, allowing for targeted pre-processing. This phase enabled the examination of connections between orders and offers, developing an entity-relationship diagram to gain a deep understanding of data interrelationships.

Subsequently, the work continued with data preparation, further refining the contained information. During this process, issues emerged, such as negative time intervals between offers and orders, stemming from the organization's data extraction methods. This analysis also helped identify key indicators, including the order conversion rate from offers, the average time between offers and orders, and the sales rate across different industries. These results formed a robust foundation for constructing the artificial intelligence model required by Adige SpA.

 

Solutions & Results 


The adoption of a multidisciplinary approach, combining both machine learning and deep learning, has been a core success factor in enhancing business dynamics for BLM.

  1. In the first approach, by implementing machine learning - in particular, the K-Means Clustering algorithm - it was possible to identify groups of customers with similar purchasing behaviors. This segmentation paved the way for more targeted business strategies, allowing the adaptation of operations to the unique characteristics of each cluster. The use of a Random Forest enabled us to accurately predict the demand for machines in various product categories over time.
     
  2. In the second approach based on deep learning, the use of neural networks allowed the exploitation of a broad spectrum of variables, including the current month, customer sector, and region, to obtain detailed forecasts. Despite the complexity of the model, its flexibility in adapting to different customer combinations led to more accurate results than company forecasts, opening the way to more precise and optimized production planning for three different product categories.


The integration of these solutions - AI Planner and Forecasting AI - can therefore represent a crucial step in improving forecast accuracy and optimizing production planning, providing more reliable and detailed results. The collaboration between data-driven models and human expertise opens perspectives for more efficient planning, reducing storage costs, improving resource management, and consolidating BLM's position as a leader in the industry.

50 students from the University of Trento and 7 selected companies are the protagonists of the second edition of the Industrial AI Challenge organized by HIT - HUB Innovazione Trentino. 

Industrial AI Challenge have allowed selected companies to discover and test the benefits of artificial intelligence for the analysis and optimization of industrial production processes. 

Five groups of university students, with the support of industry experts, performed advanced statistical analysis and applied Machine Learning techniques, creating predictive models based on data provided by companies.

This edition saw Denis, Innovation Manager in Thread Solutions, involved for 11 weeks as a mentor to support the team with data analysis and production process management in the challenge proposed by Vetrosistem.

The Challenge


Vetrosistem launches a challenge that aims to understand and predict the processing times of insulating glass panels, starting from the statistical data provided by the 4.0 machines that perform the process. That predictive system gives objective knowledge of the production process and enables strategic and operational choices to be made that increase productivity, efficiency, and quality in lean manufacturing.

Results


A team of three students is addressing the challenge.
Once received the dataset, the team started working on the linkage with the data provided and began to develop regression methods for predicting the production time for orders received by clients. Despite the amount of data available being constantly updated, the Solvers have been able to develop some Machine learning statistics on the collected data, allowing the company to understand, for example, which customers require more area in window production.

Not only. The team predicted panel production time, taking into account possible problems during production (ex. closure days, machines out of service, queues, type of panel, etc...). Those are relevant data for knowing the timing of individual orders, received from customers and making on-time deliveries.

Other statistics now available to Vetrositem are: 

  • A graph of the different customers and their respective averages of the commissioned area;
  • The customer who purchased the most extensive window panel;
  • An estimate of waste
  • A prediction of the machined area (sq. m.)

Salesforce acquires Mulesoft


Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is banking on MuleSoft’s ability to unlock data from legacy systems and connect them to the cloud.

The recent acquisition of Mulesoft by Salesforce was an ever present topic at this edition of the Mulesoft summit. Yet it’s clear that there will be no immediate leadership changes and MuleSoft will continue to operate independently as a Salesforce subsidiary. They will continue to be an open, technology agnostic platform.

"Salesforce is great at helping businesses connect to their customers and MuleSoft is great at helping business connect to their data.” The explosion of mobile apps, software-as-a-service applications, big data and IoT made it more expensive to connect data. The emergence of artificial intelligence will only add more complexity.

The modern API has grown up to be the de facto building block for pretty much all the software innovation that we've seen in the last ten years,

Bringing together the best of Salesforce and MuleSoft will offer an unparalleled customer-centric platform.
 

The keynotes and breakout sessions


The key themes were speed, agility, and legacy modernisation.

  1. Speed
    “It's not the big that eat the small-- it's the fast that eat the slow”
    Are your ready for the fourth industrial revolution? It’s in full swing and the rate of change itself is also increasing.
    Technology is enabling change at faster rates each year, and it has never been easier for a new entrant to overtake an established player in just a few years. The bar for customer service is also rising; both internal and external users now expect customised, real-time, seamless omni-channel interactions.
     
  2. Agility
    Companies that can’t adjust quickly to the changing market expectations will be at best, marginalised, and at worst, out of business. There are lots of casualties in retail, companies that couldn’t adapt quick enough to the changing landscape.
    But it doesn’t only affect retail, lot’s of other industries are becoming victim of this evolution. Nobody is immune. Nowadays IT is present in every company and their future depends on how quickly they realise they have to act.
     
  3. Legacy Modernisation
    Companies grow and IT systems age. Implementing changes has become more difficult because old technologies don’t adapt well to new requirements. Years of accumulated technical debt slows down the progress.
    After acquiring and merging a company, most likely a company’s IT landscape will become a distributed, heterogeneous environment that raise projects’ costs and timelines. Instead companies need tools that connect their systems, hide the internal maze, create friendly interfaces and break the tight dependencies that create monolithic architectures.
    Innovation, modernisation and being ready for the fourth industrial revolution is allowing the development of new applications and features to be built on top in a decoupled way simultaneously.

With the Anypoint platform Titan release Mulesoft allows you to eliminate observability gaps and maintain control over the complex landscape of cloud and on-premises applications, data, and devices without sacrificing agility.  

During the summit, MuleSoft announced several new features/functionalities:

  • Mule 4 and Studio: next-generation multi-cloud runtime engine and IDE.
  • Anypoint Runtime Fabric: A container service for deploying Mule runtimes across clouds.
  • Anypoint Monitoring: Monitoring and diagnostics purpose-built for application networks.
  • Anypoint Security: A suite of advanced security capabilities advanced perimeter and tokenization services, simple to apply.
     

What’s next?


Speed, Agility and Modernisation are more important than ever, and across industries. While the products are different, the IT challenges are very similar. We’re looking forward to see what Salesforce and Mulesoft will accomplish together and what next years features will be.

Infosyn

Infosyn delivers electronic invoicing services to public and private entities. Connecting to the Interchange System (SDI) managed by the central revenue agency (Agencia delle entrate), their customers are able to gather all information and details needed for every invoice through their system. We’ve configured Mulesoft in such a way that the central invoicing tool gathers the information from the different platforms for every single invoice. As a result Infosyn’s clients only need one platform to have all information.

In one of our last remote company’s reunions with all our staff, a colleague spoke about new people that will soon be part of our team, labeling them “resources”. 

 

This event has given us the occasion to remind ourselves about how the term “resource”, if used to define a colleague or a cooperator, is the messenger of a potentially bad significance and that it has gradually become an outdated way of thinking for describing the relationship between an individual and its organization that does not reflect in any way our company’s reality.

A resource is the computer we use to work.

A resource is the software we use to develop our projects. 

Easily replaceable, absolutely impersonal, incapable of any choice. 

People, instead, are the true essence of the company, the main characters of the challenge that Thread has decided to accept, despite all the difficulties found in this particular moment we’re living in. 

In particular, in order to transparently face all the changes that are confronted with; we have decided to periodically share the overall economic and financial performance of the company. In this way, we will make everyone more aware about the choices Thread is making and everyone will become an active protagonist of the challenge we are facing.

Last but not least, the name of the company demonstrates it: solutions don’t exist without “solutors”. Solutions can’t be found by themselves alone and aren’t surely found by the company either: solutions are found by the people in the company!

1. Invite your team and start selling! 


Go to Settings > Manage > Users.
Add a user and set his/her authorizations.
You can decide to already add a few tasks, in this way, the user can start working as soon as s/he accepts the invitation received via email. By using the general filter you can see all the tasks on which your team is working on, and also see every individual task started by every component of the team. 
 

2. Collaborate with your team!


If you want to create small teams that will be working on a particular project, now you can do it!
You can create small groups of people using the right filters, and see who is working on what. In this way, you'll have a complete picture of the work done by your team. 
 

3. Team's objectives 


Objective are a great way to measure data from your sales, and to make sure your team is able to reach its goals.  
During the implementation of a goal, you can decide whether to assign the goal to a single person, to everyone or to a particular team. You can decide the period in which you want Pipedrive to track your goal.  
 

4. User's authorization 


Go to settings > manage users > authorizations.
Two main roles are available to choose: Admin and standard user + Manager (in the case of Pipedrive PRO plan).
The first one can do pretty much everything: the admin can add other users and manage billings but can not see private emails. For all other users, he can personalize every permission according to his/her specific job.  
 

5. Visibility groups


This setting allows you to limit the visibility of a deal, person, organization, or product. This useful tool allows you to check that your data are visible only from authorized people, and thus are secure. You can create hierarchic groups: in this way, those who have a higher level of permission can see what the other people having lower permissions can do.

4 possibilities of permission are available: 

  • Possibility to see the data only if you are the owner
  • Possibility to see data of the users that are a part of your subgroup
  • Possibility to see your data, those of other users from your group and those from users that are below you in terms of permission
     

6. Security


Security is one of the most important and critical aspects for a client, and with Pipedrive, it is guaranteed!

This section allows you to have full visibility of every access from the user and from the security events regarding your account. Moreover, it offers you updates on how you can improve the security of your company.

The following sections are available below: 

  • “now”: it offers you the possibility to have a rapid view of what's happening: how many users have logged in and from which locations. Moreover, there is the possibility to see some details, e.g. active devices. 
  • “last 7 days”: This section shows the anomalies of account access: e.g. new devices or location and other details such as device used, who used it and for how long.  
  • “Control register”: You can see all the security events, all the changes done to the account, e.g. a password change. 
  • “Security evaluation”: This section gives you a quick report on what Pipedrive regards as vulnerable in terms of security: you will see some hints on how you can improve your security
  • “Active devices”: You can see from which whereabout and from which device and which authentication method the user entered on the platform. In case of anomalies, you can disconnect the device of the user. 
     

7. Single Sign On (SSO)


Tired to create multiple accounts for your app? This tool allows you to add multiple applications in a single place, in this way, you can access to all your app in one single sign on. Useful, huh? You won't have to remember 100 passwords anymore! This process requests a bit of technical knowledge and so I advise you to speak with your IT personnel.

Planning fallacy bias


You've surely heard about this cognitive bias, elaborated by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in 1979.

This cognitive bias consists of a phenomenon where people undervalue the time necessary for finishing a task, even though they are aware of how similar activities done in the past required more time than estimated.

An important research developed by Lovallo and Kahneman (2003) demonstrated how managers often fall in this cognitive bias, causing them to rely their decisions on a fake optimism, instead of evaluating gains, losses and probabilities. 

This inaccuracy in formulating these estimations can lead to important economic, personal, and social costs. 

How can we avoid planning fallacy bias?

You can find some examples below: 

  • carefully evaluate every step you'll encounter in achieving your goal 
  • split your objective(s) into smaller tasks
  • think about every component of the team, and assign them a period of time for completing the task 
  • visualize the plan from an observer's perspective 
  • create some implementation intentions: in this way, every member of the team will focus on the future and imagine when s/he will have the intention to work on a particular project.
